    Sadistic yobs shot a defenceless kangaroo with a crossbow in heartless "prank" in Australia while the country battles bushfires that have killed a billion animals.

    The animal named Frank was shot through his back-right leg with the tip of the arrow and was left with a hole in his neck in the mindless act.

    He was found injured and bleeding at Lysterfield Park in Melbourne was taken to Woofpurnay Veterinary Hospital for treatmennt.

    Frank had life-saving surgery and is now being cared for at Five Freedoms Animal Rescue shelter.

    The shelter publicised Frank's tragic case in a Facebook post where they slammed the "sick and cruel" culprits.

    The said: "While our wildlife are suffering horrendously through the devastating fires in Victoria, some sick and cruel b*****d has added to the pain.

    "Pain to an innocent animal and pain to those of us that are already struggling to cope with what our animals are going through.

    "As the fires burn, and firefighters risk their lives daily to save life and property, someone, a bow hunter, again shows that all people are not good and confirms why we need greater control over the purchase and use of archery equipment.

    "How many times have we seen such a despicable act involving the illegal shooting of a kangaroo with arrows?

    "Even the worst fires in Victoria’s history didn't distract this cruel person from attacking an animal for fun. There can be no justification.

    "This poor kangaroo was attacked within Lysterfield Park in Melbourne, a place where kangaroos are meant to be safe and protected. But there is no such thing when it comes to human behaviour."

    The post also thanks vets at Woofpurnay for saving Frank's life.

    At least 28 people have died in the bushfires and thousands have lost their homes.

    According to the University of Sydney more than one billion animals have died.

    Professor Chris Dickman, from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Science, said ""I think there's nothing quite to compare with the devastation that's going on over such a large area so quickly.

    "It's a monstrous event in terms of geography and the number of individual animals affected."

    Over the weekend Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan pledged to donate A$500 for every save made by goalkeepers in England's top flight in response to the ongoing bushfire crisis.

    He is now set to hand over 28,000 Australian dollars (around £15,000) to a wildlife rescue fund after 56 saves were recorded.

    Other generous celebrities who have made donations include Kylie Minogue, Elton John, Pink and Lewis Hamilton.
