Science news this week informs us that the interstellar object passing through our solar system is the largest ever observed, while experts have debunked claims that 3I/ATLAS could be alien technology.
3I/ATLAS is an unusual comet that came to us from outside our solar system. A controversial new non-peer-reviewed paper discusses the possibility that 3I/ATLAS could be a disguised example of “possibly hostile” extraterrestrial technology. But experts tell Live Science that the claims are “unreasonable” and “offensive.”
Meanwhile, on a more mundane level, it’s Shark Week. Discovery has been running a weeklong series of shark-focused programming each year since 1988. This time, the show included a segment on a rare “black mako” caught off the coast of California, and Live Science delved into the mystery of why sharks freeze when flipped on their backs.
