Xpeng, the Chinese electric automobile (EV) manufacturer, has displayed a fresh humanoid automaton boasting movements so authentic that corporate spokespeople felt urged to dissect it publicly, affirming no one was concealed within.

This stems from Xpeng’s specialized artificial intelligence (AI) robotics infrastructure, empowering it to decipher ocular input and react corporeally without necessitating translation of its perceptions into spoken words.

During IRON’s debut during Xpeng’s AI Day held in Guangzhou on November 5, China, He Xiaopeng, chairman and CEO of Xpeng Motors, alluded that IRON’s form was intended to convey human familiarity, albeit with slight disquiet.

Company representatives stated the machine contains 82 degrees of flexibility, with 22 in each hand, facilitating flexure, rotation, and gesticulation across numerous bodily locations.

It’s fueled by a trio of bespoke AI chips, yielding a collective 2,250 trillion operations per second (TOPS) in processing ability, which Xpeng asserts positions it among the most potent humanoid robots devised thus far. For context, the Core Ultra 200V series processor by Intel, integrated into select premium laptops, achieves a mere 120 TOPS.

IRON man

IRON’s framework is based on a principle its designers term “born from within,” denoting the robot’s architecture replicates the human physique beginning at its core.

The robot presents an inner endoskeleton alongside a bionic muscular system adept at accommodating diverse body profiles, spanning from slender to stout, customizable by users. Its superficial coating is furthermore composed of “full-coverage” fabricated skin, as He remarked during his address, designed for a “warmer, more intimate sensation.”

“Successive models feature highly pliable bones, robust bionic muscles, coupled with delicate skin. We trust it will exhibit comparable stature and proportions to humans,” He declared. “Looking forward, robots shall serve as companions and collaborators. My belief is analogous to car purchases, one can select varying colors, exteriors, and cabin designs. In the times ahead, procuring a robot will involve the option to determine gender, hair length, and attire per individual requirements.”

Xpeng further notes that IRON is the initial humanoid automaton across the globe energized by an all-solid-state battery. These solid-state batteries employ ceramics or polymers in place of the volatile liquids within conventional lithium-ion variants, enhancing safety within the enclosed scenarios the robot is engineered to inhabit.

IRON anticipates mass manufacturing, though Xpeng dismisses immediate application towards household tasks, citing prospective hazards from a humanoid robot executing actions within disordered or capricious residential settings. Alternatively, it is poised for launch in commercial environs encompassing stores, offices, alongside corporate display venues, with primary renditions approximated for unveiling within Xpeng locales by 2026.

This statement comprises an element within Xpeng’s comprehensive push into “physical AI,” aimed at coalescing robotics, autonomous motor vehicles, and AI growth across a consolidated infrastructure. Earlier in the year, the firm displayed a prototype flying vehicle intended to deploy from a Cybertruck-inspired mobile base.

Interest in humanoid robots has surged lately. Last October saw Chinese robotics establishment Unitree display its pirouetting, karate-proficient H2 model. Differing from IRON, an official release date for Unitree’s bot remains pending, implying Xpeng’s entry may well overtake it onto store or office premises.
