Encountering virtual reality (VR) might soon become even more immersive thanks to a device that can be licked, allowing you to “taste” within virtual worlds.

The compact, “lollipop”-esque interface replicates as many as nine different flavors and can even integrate with odors to elevate the sensation of taste, making it appear genuine, scientists stated in a recent article published Nov. 25 in the journal PNAS.

The lickable gadget comprises miniature pockets filled with gels. These gels hold compounds which, when they mix with saliva, produce various flavors. Thus far, these flavors encompass salt, sugar, cherry, citric acid, green tea, passion fruit, grapefruit, durian, and milk.

Each distinct flavor is only activated when a minimal electrical flow travels across the respective gel, and the intensity of the taste provided hinges on the voltage used. This entails that several tastes might be combined for generating novel flavor experiences.

Beyond rendering VR gameplay extra engaging, the gadget could possess feasible uses, such as taste analysis carried out by physicians, internet-based food shopping, and education, the team posited.

This marks not the first instance that researchers have endeavored to introduce taste into the simulated realm. Other teams have investigated administering flavoring agents directly onto the tongue and invigorating it through temperature variations and electrical power.

This recent advancement offers a precise, energy-efficient choice within a small, portable structure. However, Liu pointed out that the tech remains quite early in its development and harbors restrictions. For instance, the gels currently endure only for about one hour’s worth of tasting. The team has plans to prolong its lifespan and grow the array of available flavors.
