Utilizing LED lights and luminous sticks, scientists in the Bahamas have detected an ancient deep-sea crustacean boasting enormous eyes and a translucent form. 

Even though the species, christened Booralana nickorum, is recently classified, it has existed on the planet for 300 million years and could perform a critical service in maintaining the ecosystem’s robustness, the investigators noted in a report released Jan. 12 in the periodical Zootaxa.

This recent species features a firm outer shell, a segmented physique, and sizable, multifaceted eyes for spotting possible nourishment. Given its residence in the deep ocean, where illumination is scarce, it lacks any requirement for hue or coloration, hence its white appearance, verging on see-through.

“One can see its insides and such,” stated study co-author Nicholas Higgs, director of research and innovation at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, to Live Science.

Spanning about 2.2 to 3 inches (55 to 76 millimeters) lengthwise, it greatly surpasses its land-based kin within the pill bug group — likewise recognized as roly poly bugs or woodlice — which averages around 0.55 inch (14 mm). B. nickorum’s considerable proportions offer the deep-sea scavenger an advantage as it lingers on the ocean floor for sustenance to drift from above.

The research group unearthed B. nickorum at profoundnesses varying from roughly 1,770 to 1,840 feet (540 to 560 meters) across an underwater incline inside the Bahamas’ Exuma Sound. They procured the samples throughout a pair of journeys, during April 2014 and February 2019, organized via OceanX and the Cape Eleuthera Institute. Back in 2014, they employed baited eel snares, which gathered deep-sea isopods — a crustacean variant marked by a flattened, sectioned anatomy — prompting their return in 2019 for further scrutiny employing light-based traps. Diverging from bait, these devices showcased a flashing, multicolored LED fishing beacon; a verdant luminous rod: a green, deep-plunge LED fishing beacon; alongside a configurable white LED beacon intended to entice entities by echoing the bioluminescence emitted by deep-sea beings. 

 Booralana nickorum came to light through a duo of voyages to a submarine incline in the Bahamas’ Exuma Sound. 

Upon the researchers’ examination of the specimens aboard the vessel, they expressed certainty that the species presented itself as “distinctly dissimilar from anything previously observed,” Higgs clarified. 

Subsequent evaluations substantiated B. nickorum’s status as a fresh species. Its designation pays tribute to a pair of individuals from senior author Edward Brooks’ lineage, each named Nicholas Brooks.

These isopods hold significance in the ecosystem due to their role in hastening the breakdown of plant-based or animal-derived substances, enabling the broader ecosystem to reap the benefits of these energy reservoirs. “Without them, these materials would merely descend and remain confined within the sediment,” Higgs clarified.

Likewise, these crustaceans guarantee the sequestration of carbon contained within the organic components descending from the shallower zones, securely locking it away within the deep ocean for epochs.

This advantage allows researchers to more accurately foresee the consequential effects of human intervention, such as mining operations. “Should there be disruption at one site, what ramifications will ripple through to the organisms within a distinct zone?” Higgs inquired.

Considering that an increasing number of nations, notably the Bahamas, entertain propositions for deep-sea petroleum exploration, Higgs asserts that ventures of this sort remain indispensable in empowering decision-makers to thoroughly appreciate the potential impacts of drilling upon their invaluable ecosystems. 

“Absent our capacity to engage with this setting,” he concluded, “our likelihood of cherishing it, grasping its complexities, or genuinely valuing its significance diminishes substantially.”
