Brit on holiday in US shocked by price of supermarket steak

An American holidaymaker has shared her shock at the cost of living in the US, and it’s not just the price of steak that’s got her talking.

When you jet off on holidays, it’s always a thrill to dive into the local cuisine and soak up new experiences.

Every nation boasts its own unique customs and culinary delights that are a joy to discover when travelling. However, one aspect that often catches tourists off guard is the cost of dining out or even grocery shopping.

A TikTok user by the name of farahshamz recently shared her astonishment over food prices during her trip to the United States, leaving her followers quite taken aback. Far from being engrossed in the usual tourist attractions, it was the eye-watering cost of steak that really made an impression on her.

In her video, she documents her experience in a US supermarket, claiming “prices are just bad everywhere at this point”. She zooms in on a price tag showing flank steak at $14.99, which is roughly equivalent to £11.71.

Reflecting on her discovery, Farah explained: “I’ll be honest, I don’t know what’s worse. $15 dollars for some steak. I don’t know if this is cheaper or worse than London.”

She continued: “I don’t know. But then, if I want to turn into a vegan or vegetarian, salad is expensive as well. Vegan stuff is expensive. I don’t have an option.”

She then shifts focus to tangerine juice cartons priced at $4.69 (£3.40), deeming them outrageously costly, especially since they weren’t even labelled as organic to warrant the price.

Concluding her supermarket saga, she said: “I officially believe the prices in the States are worse,” before hesitantly adding, “I was going to say except for the milk but $7.00 (£5.50) for two gallons of milk.

“I’m sorry, I know it’s large, but it’s still not worth it. And then it’s like $4.00 (£3.13) for eggs.”

The video has since gained a lot of attraction, with viewers expressing their shock at the extreme prices of basic food items.

One viewer remarked: “And those prices are pre tax even.” Another chimed in with: “I’d rather starve at this point.”

A third commented: “The milk is literally the only sensibly priced thing for the quantity.” Meanwhile, a fourth quipped: “At this point, I’d just cop a cow from NW England, and call it a day.”

However, one social media user attempted to provide some context, suggesting that Americans receive “higher wages” than Brits, which could explain the inflated prices.
