Man finds cryptic riddle from 1975 hidden behind wallpaper in house

A man has discovered a secret message in his home when redecorating – and has reconnected with the person who penned it almost 50 years ago.

When it comes to redecorating your home, most people keep their fingers crossed for perfectly plastered walls under their old wallpaper.

But one homeowner got more than he bargained for when stripping back his room ready to redecorate when he discovered an almost 50-year-old message.

Written in 1975 by Eileen Walmsley, the message reads: “I am here, you are there, separated by time alone. What’s it like in the future[?] Or am I the past[?] The only answer to that you are my future, I am your past. I wish you a good day.”

The man later connected with Eileen, who was a teenager when she wrote the message and is now in her 60s. Providing an update one user explained how Eileen wrote the riddle when her parents redecorated her room.

After the pair got back in touch, Eileen said she was delighted to hear her poem brought a smile to someone’s face almost 50 years on. The user said: “She goes by Eileen Palmer now and is in her 60s. The family who found the poem found her and have been in contact with her.” Commenting on the post, other users started sharing their own stories about leaving or discovering ‘secret’ messages in unexpected places.

One user said: “We did something like this when we papered (in a way that should be revealed if they pull it, I think) my family’s kitchen. I want to say about the same timeframe, maybe a little later but before the mid-80s. Well, not that alike, it was a bunch of kids being goofy, although ‘How’s your flying car?’ was one scribble.”

Another user added: “When I was sitting my school leavers exams in 2005 in Ireland I remember finding a random cupboard with graffiti dated 1992 which seemed prehistoric to me at the time. I added my own and dated it and it’s crazy how old my timeline now seems to someone else.”

A third user said: “Once my parents drew the outline of a body on the carpet they were replacing just for laughs… the carpet guys gave us some strange looks.”

One more user added: “As a carpenter writing weird cryptic nonsense for future readers inside of walls is one of my passions, I’m sure I’m not alone in this.”
