Visitors to a favoured seaside spot in the UK were left bemused when a series of “strange” items began to surface on the shoreline.
Cornwall’s shores still frequently receive Lego pieces, the remains from a container ship accident involving the plastic toys dating back to 1997. However, a significantly different cargo is now affecting the East Sussex coast, as Brighton resident Wednesday Holmes discovered last week.

“This evening, quite unexpectedly a lot of fresh vegetables and fruit have been washed up on the beach – I reckon it’s from a ship’s catering provisions,” she mentioned in a TikTok video. After unfastening one of the net bags filled with celeriac, Wednesday went on to observe individual lettuces, onions and limes scattered along the beach.
“There’s not a huge amount on this side, but on the far side of the beach where increasing numbers of individuals are showing up, there are large, plump sweet potatoes, oranges and lemons,” she included.
Wednesday also shared that fellow locals had come across unopened bottles of gin and beer among the scattered items. “It’s really peculiar,” she commented. “I just ran into another dog walker, and he’s gathering the lime to take it home so he can use it for lime chutney.”

She ended by advising her audience that another person walking their dog had indicated the items had been discarded into the ocean by a ship near the Isle of Wight.

Jess Glynn, in the meantime, was additionally present on Brighton beach on the same day. “What you’re seeing is real – those are onions you’re observing in Brighton and Hove!” she announced in her own clip.
She proceeded: “This is totally strange, but there are onions being washed ashore in Brighton right now. The cargo vessel was absolutely packed with fresh goods… there’s carrots, onions, potatoes and entire sacks of coconuts, milk and beer cans… practically everything is washing up.”
On a more earnest point, however, Jess asked others to help with the cleanup, mentioning that the local council was especially interested in collecting “anything that won’t break down”. Indeed, after getting back home with a pail of rubbish including plastic, rope and polystyrene, she recommended: “If you can gather up even just one object, it will make a huge impact.”
Responding to the post, one TikTok user offered photographic evidence, stating: “My sister also discovered a crate of Thai lager, some plastic gloves and masks.” Someone else reported: “They are everywhere across Seaford/Newhaven, too. I almost feel like I’ve watched too much Walking Dead as I’m thinking ooh they’d be happy to find that food.”

A different individual included: “Not just Brighton. There are onions, plastic cups and sanitiser bottles scattered the whole way along the East and West Sussex coast.” And another TikTok user joked: “Was there a leakage on the ship?”
Following Jess’ advice, Brighton and Hove City Council released a statement following the incident, writing online: “Council teams have been busy tidying the seafront and ensuring public safety over the past few days, following gravel and waste being washed ashore as a result of Storm Goretti. The weather event caused high tides and strong winds, moving considerable volumes of gravel around, onto pathways and access points.”
It continued: “The problem has been worsened by shipping containers which fell off a ship near the Isle of Wight last year now washing up along the south coast. As a result of the storm, household goods and food products have appeared on the beaches of Brighton and Hove this week.”

Also, the local council further advised: “Even though the items themselves are not dangerous, there is a major risk of pollution from the ocean water and broken components from the shipping container. Please do not take any chances.
“Council staff and external contractors are clearing the debris in safe areas and logging the objects recovered. This process will require time owing to the quantity of items, as well as the dimensions and weight of particular bulky sections of the container, and how far it has dispersed along the coastline.”
