A mum was mortified when a £5 was posted through her letterbox as she didn’t understand why – until she figured out the ‘scary’ reasoning.
Discovering cash unexpectedly can make anyone’s day a bit brighter.
We’ve all had that little buzz of excitement from finding some loose change on the pavement; it may just be a penny, making your day seem slightly luckier, or sometimes if you’re particularly fortunate, you might find a stray pound or even the joy of an abandoned banknote fluttering in the wind.
But imagine the astonishment when coming home to find money protruding from your letterbox. That was precisely what happened to one befuddled mother who came home to find £5 in her post.
Ali Smith was mystified to spot the cash poking through her letterbox, as she had no clue how this mysterious gift arrived or what its purpose was.
She later found out the “scary” reason the money was left at her doorstep, and took to social media to explain.

In a video on TikTok, she said: “I’ve just come into the porch to find a £5 note posted through the letterbox. No envelope, no nothing. I’m thinking, ‘Who on Earth is posting £5 through the letterbox?'”
Ali could not crack the confusing conundrum until taking her pup out for a stroll that evening. When she returned to her home later on, she noticed the answer staring right from her front window.
She continued: “[My son] did some Halloween crafts yesterday. He put the picture in the window, with this sign [that says] ‘If I scared you, please leave five pounds’.”

Ali was left in fits of laughter when she discovered the reason behind the unexpected cash delivery through her letterbox. The kind-hearted stranger had decided to indulge her son’s playful sign, handing over the requested £5.
Social media users were equally amused by the incident, with many commending Ali’s son for his “genius” signage. Some hailed him as an “entrepreneur in the making”, while others admitted they would have been tempted to reward the young lad’s efforts with a fiver as well.
Inquiries about whether Ali would pass on the money to her son were met with confirmation that she had indeed done so, and he was “buzzing” to learn someone had paid for his eerie artwork.
As for the “amazing” individual who slipped the note through the door, Ali confessed she had “no clue” about the identity of the generous donor.
But she speculated: “We live on a very popular coastal walk route, though. I suspect a kind walker that thought it was cute.”
