The long, slender animal, which was found dead and tangled in seaweed on Saturday, immediately sparked curiosity due to its eerie appearance.
The creature’s open mouth and peculiar body drew wide speculation online, especially after a photo was posted on Reddit, where users tried to guess what it might be.
Some Reddit users suggested that the mysterious creature resembled a plesiosaur, the prehistoric marine reptile famously linked to the legend of the Loch Ness Monster.

According to Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the creature is likely a moray eel, a species commonly found in Southern California waters.
Daly said that the animal appeared “a little bleached out from being dead,” but it matched the characteristics of a moray eel.
