Following numerous years of attempting to conceive, one family opted to browse a Russian adoption site – and believed they located their perfect pairing.
In 1997, Crystal and Jesse spotted a nine-year-old girl they felt was destined to be their daughter. “She was a gorgeous child,” Crystal expressed.

“We considered … here is an older child we can afford a conventional life.” They named her Caralee. Simultaneously, the pair chose to adopt three-year-old Joshua via the same adoption organization, as per CBS’ 48 hours.
The initial worry emerged when Crystal and Jesse acquired Caralee’s medical records, as reported by the Mirror.
“They indicated she was oligophrenic,” Crystal stated. Oligophrenic is an obsolete term for an intellectual impairment.

Even so, the organization assured the couple it was simply a “developmental setback,” Crystal remarked. “And we received assurances that this child was healthy and that in a favorable environment … with the finest physicians in America assisting her with the developmental concerns, that she should thrive.”

In July, Crystal and Jesse journeyed to the orphanage in the small settlement of Borovichi. Crystal remembered her initial encounter with Caralee: “She gazed into my eyes affectionately, ‘You’re my mama.'”.
Upon the adoption’s ratification, Crystal commenced to nurture apprehensions regarding Caralee’s deportment. “We did observe the anger, yet it was explainable,” Crystal commented.
“Undoubtedly a child integrating into a foreign culture, a new family … departing her domicile. That’s her only familiarity.”
After relocating to a new abode in Georgia, Caralee supposedly commenced manifesting reclusive and antagonistic conduct, compelling Crystal to resign from her position in an endeavor to rectify the circumstance.
On Boxing Day in 1998, Crystal asserted that Caralee’s wrath peaked. Caralee and her adopted sibling Joshua were frolicking in the yard when Crystal expressed she overheard her four-year-old son shrieking.
She maintained she observed Caralee suspending Joshua over the railing of the 30-foot-high veranda.
“Her visage, it conveyed fury and animosity,” Crystal recounted. Crystal insisted Caralee release her brother and inquired as to her actions.
“‘I’m gonna kill him,” “Why?” Crystal questioned her daughter. “‘I’m vexed with him’… I articulated…”You don’t intend to kill him. ‘ And she responded, “yes, I do.”
Caralee additionally informed her parents she was hearing voices and hallucinating, as Caralee, now an adult named Sabrina, has corroborated.
Thus, the couple interned Caralee in a psychiatric establishment and she spent months confined.
Crystal and Jesse procured supplementary documents from the adoption agency regarding Caralee’s early life. Crystal stated the papers indicated “the mother was immoral and antisocial,” Crystal reported.
The documents further depicted how Caralee’s biological mother abandoned her “soiled, famished, and in tatters. “
At the orphanage Caralee resided in a specialized unit for those with mental disabilities – Crystal and Jesse alleged the adoption agency neglected to impart this information in advance.
Nina Kostina, instrumental in orchestrating Caralee’s adoption, repudiated allegations of concealing details and clarified that the medical specifics she secured were constrained by Russian privacy regulations.
“Once the parents are present at the orphanage, they possess access to all medical files, to the physicians,” Kostina elucidated. “And this is their opportunity to pose any inquiries.”
Following Caralee’s four months in the sanatorium, Crystal and Jesse were compelled to release her as their insurance began to lapse.
Jesse voiced their belief she posed a peril to Joshua. He declared: “She has reiterated this for months on numerous instances, ‘if afforded another opportunity, I will eliminate him. “
Jesse affixed surveillance cameras around the premises and installed an alarm on Caralee’s bedroom portal.
The potent pharmaceuticals Caralee had been prescribed were supposedly proving ineffectual, and Crystal and Jesse remained anxious for Joshua’s welfare, thus relocating him to his grandmother’s residence in Texas.

“Because I might harm him,” Caralee responded. Dr Brian Kennedy, a psychiatrist who treated Caralee, disclosed she suffered from attachment disorder. “She does relish smiling and laughing,” Dr. Kennedy conveyed. “However, I surmise when assessing her past experiences and observing her functionality under duress, she can undergo a dramatic metamorphosis and exhibit considerable fury.”
Another psychiatrist adopted a divergent perspective, asserting “Caralee’s demeanor … was faultless,” whilst deeming Jesse and Crystal as “frequently detached and aloof” toward their daughter. By 1999 Crystal and Jesse resolved to return her to the orphanage.
“We are unable to perpetuate as her parents,” Jesse expressed. Caralee was repatriated to Russia for care at a psychiatric institution. All the same, preceding her admittance Caralee conveyed: “I did not endeavor to slay my brother,. I simply attempted … to elevate him … due to his excessive weight … I adore him. Caralee, confined in a locked ward at the hospital, stated: “I don’t perceive this as a safe environment. I desire to return to America. I’m apprehensive of remaining here.”
The pair nullified the adoption in early 2000. Two decades subsequent, now recognized as Sabrina, and a parent herself, divulged her personal rendition of occurrences. She remained interned for two months until the woman who facilitated her adoption – Nina Kostina – repatriated her to the United States. In 2002, Sabrina was adopted by a new family in North Carolina – where she finalized her High School curriculum.
In 2008, Sabrina volunteered with the charity Mercy Ships and committed two years to supplying medical aid to underprivileged communities in Africa. “It was a gratifying undertaking,” she expressed.
In 2010 she commenced employment at a hospital and in 2012 she encountered fifth grade educator Phil Caldwell at church.
She conveyed: “I became enamored with him upon witnessing his interactions with children. “The couple married in 2014 and welcomed three daughters and one son.
Sabrina Caldwell asserts she ingests no medication and experiences no mental health tribulations. She stated regarding her initial adoptive parents: “I retain considerable esteem for them. Placing myself in their predicament, I likely would have executed nearly the same course of action.”
