Salomao Rodrigues Faustino, a two-year-old boy, tragically died of severe heatstroke after being left in a hot car with temperatures of 32°C for several hours with all the windows and doors closed.
A two-year-old child who was buckled into a car by his kindergarten teacher died of severe heatstroke because she forgot he was there.
Baby Salomao Rodrigues Faustino was found nearly unconscious in a car in Neropolis, in the Brazilian state of Goais, on February 18, after crèche director Flaviana Lima suddenly remembered him and called emergency services. The child was secured in a child seat and unable to move, and all the windows and doors of the car were closed.
According to experts, the temperature inside the car reached almost 60°C after four hours when Salomao was rescued. He was tragically pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the Sagrado Coracao de Jesus hospital.
The Lima daycare director was arrested 55 miles away after allegedly attempting to flee. She was subsequently charged with manslaughter and is being held at the Aparecida de Goiania Temporary Prison Complex, prosecutors said.
Lima picked up the baby from her home and took him to the crèche in her car, but when she parked, she forgot about him and locked him inside. Police Chief Andre Fernandes confirmed: “The owner of the crèche forgot the two-year-old in a locked car in the scorching sun for four hours.” In a statement, Lima’s lawyer, Giovanni Caldas Vieira Machado, said she was “deeply shaken, experiencing the most terrible moment of her life.”
He also claimed that Lima tried to save Salomao's life before the paramedics arrived. He said: “There was no intent, no conscious negligence or wilful negligence.” In her statement to police, Lima admitted that she forgot about Salomao because she was busy preparing for the arrival of three new children.
The baby's grief-stricken mother, Giselle Faustino, said: “They took my heart and my joy. I can't close my eyes without thinking of your suffering. Forgive me, my love. I wanted to do so much for you.”
She added: “How can I go home now and not see your joy?! (…) I can't close my eyes without imagining your suffering. Forgive me, my love. I wanted to do so much for you.”
