A driving educator has clarified the precise definition of a potentially “confusing” traffic sign, aiming to assist learner drivers in succeeding on their theory exams. There are countless road signs present on UK roadways, all endorsed by the Highway Code.
Roadway markers are implemented to issue commands, present alerts or bearings, impart details, and signal highway maintenance.

Despite many motorists observing them on a daily basis, with a multitude of signs to remember, it is not surprising when certain individuals require a swift reminder of their denotation.
Annie is a certified driving instructor who has garnered a dedicated fanbase on social media, where she deconstructs driving regulations and presents easily digestible pointers and techniques to aid students in recalling essential knowledge for road safety.
In a recent TikTok clip, Annie emphasized a blue, round sign featuring a white arrow within, directing downwards and to the left.

Seated in the passenger side of a vehicle in motion, she addressed the camera and began: “Do you understand the meaning of this sign? Well, it’s a sign with a circular shape, which indicates that it’s a directive. It’s a sign in the shape of a blue circle, that signifies what we are obligated to do.”

Annie went on: “Now, the arrow is pointing downward and towards the left, so as we drive beyond this sign, we are compelled to pass it on the road’s left-hand side. We are not permitted to pass it on the road’s right-hand side; that would mean we’re traveling in the improper lane.”
She then shared a valuable verse to enable individuals to keep in mind the importance of circular signs. Annie expressed: “So every circular sign is an instruction, and the ones showing an arrow are indicating our required action – remember, ‘blue, must do’. Hope this is beneficial.”

Another method of remembering is that the term “order” commences with an O, mirroring the shape of these indicators.
As the visual progressed, Annie pivoted her camera to record the street ahead as they approached a roundabout. She carried on: “So this is another illustration of the blue circle sign – this one communicates that you have to pass on the left.”
Upon veering left to enter the roundabout, another blue circle sign was present on the central slope.
The driving teacher further explained: “This one relays that you have to make a left turn. Make a left turn now, you are only permitted to turn left into this roundabout.
“So, blue circle signs demonstrate the action that you must take – blue must do.”
