Just recently, two tourists stumbled upon an ancient, deadly weapon in a peaceful and completely unexpected location: on the coast of Poland.

The artifact, a dagger that is approximately 2,500 years old, was discovered on March 30.

Later that day, the Kamianske Land History Museum in Poland announced the find on its Facebook page.

The weapon was found in clay gravel on the Baltic coast. The museum paid tribute to Jacek Ukowski and Katarzyna Gierdzik, as well as recent storms, which contributed to the discovery of the weapon.

“It is rare when nature reveals to us the secrets of the distant past,” the organization said in a statement translated from Polish to English.

“And that's exactly what happened over the Baltic Sea.”

Photos posted by the museum show intricate details of the weapon, including crescents and crosses resembling stars.

“The dagger is in excellent condition, making it one of the most significant finds of its kind in Poland,” the museum said.

“The handle ends in a pointed pommel and is decorated with alternating patterns that descend to the blade.”

The museum added that experts do not yet know for what purpose this weapon was used, but the artifact will be subject to detailed study in the future.

“The patterns on the surface may indicate a connection with the cult of the sun and suggest that the dagger had ritual significance,” the organization noted.

“Also, it could have belonged to a high-profile warrior.”

The report also stated: “This dagger is certainly a genuine work of art and shows a high level of metallurgy. It was probably imported and cast in a workshop in southern Europe.”

Herdzik told the museum that the find came as a complete surprise to her.

“I didn't expect to make such a significant discovery, but as soon as I saw this item, I immediately knew it could be of great value,” she said.

The Kamensk Land History Museum also expressed gratitude to Gerdzik and Ukovsky for their “vigilance and quick response.”

“Thanks to their immediate communication, this remarkable find was properly preserved and passed on to future generations,” the museum noted.

“Their approach serves as an example of responsible attitude towards cultural heritage and preservation of historical monuments.”
