New quantum phase discovered for the first time with important implications for quantum computing

Scientists have captured a rare quantum phenomenon that was predicted more than half a century ago. The process, which creates a new state of matter, could influence the development of future quantum computing.

This phase, known as a superradiant phase transition (SRPT), occurs when two independent groups of quantum particles begin to oscillate simultaneously and in sync, the researchers reported in a new study published April 4 in the journal Science Advances.

In this experiment, the two groups of particles consisted of iron ions and erbium ions in a crystal. The scientists were able to initiate this phenomenon by applying a magnetic field more than 100,000 times greater than Earth's to a crystal made of erbium, iron, and oxygen after it had been cooled to -457°F (-271.67°C), a temperature close to absolute zero.
