The most modern fighters in the world are called “fifth generation”. They incorporate technologies developed in the first half of the 21st century. Examples of fifth generation fighters are the American F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor, the Chinese Chengdu J-20 and the Russian Sukhoi SU-57.
However, the countries are now moving toward a sixth generation of fighter jets. In recent months, China has test-flown prototypes of the J36 and J50, while the United States has selected Boeing to develop a new fighter called the F-47.
Like previous generations, the sixth generation will include significant innovations in aircraft design, on-board electronics (avionics) and weapons systems.
