A doomed Soviet satellite from 1972 will fall uncontrollably to Earth next week — and it could land almost anywhere

Part of a 53-year-old Soviet spacecraft that was destined to land on Venus is expected to return to Earth next weekend, and no one knows exactly where it will land.

The Kosmos-482 probe, developed and launched by the USSR in 1972, was part of the Venera program, which aimed to collect data from the hellish surface of Venus.

However, a malfunction in the upper stage of the Soyuz launch vehicle that carried the craft into space thwarted its mission, preventing it from reaching the planet at the speed it needed and leaving it in an elliptical orbit around our Earth.
