A bizarre incident involving a restaurant umbrella in a small South Carolina lakeside community resulted in a woman’s demise over the weekend, as reported by local authorities.

Dana Weinger, 56, was enjoying an evening outing with her husband and other relatives at Driftwood Grill Home of the Lazy Gator on Lake Marion in Summerton, South Carolina, on Saturday night when a strong wind dislodged an umbrella, transforming it into a projectile.

The umbrella struck Weinger in the neck, severing her carotid artery, as informed by Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley to WIS 10.

Local EMS personnel arrived at the scene, where Weinger was found unconscious. She was pronounced deceased at the location.

Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell detailed the incident in a conversation with KTVB.

“This is not a commonplace occurrence,” Blackwell reportedly stated. “This is simply one of those unfortunate events that transpire.”

“It was a powerful gust of wind, akin to a microburst, that swept through and not only toppled the umbrella but also sent furniture and other debris flying towards where they were seated,” she elaborated.

Blackwell described Weinger’s husband as being “visibly upset.”

“He was deeply distressed, and I conversed with the restaurant’s proprietors, who mentioned that all the family members were present as well,” Blackwell added. “They were there for a meal; it was a large gathering.”

The Driftwood Grill extended its sympathies and acknowledged the efforts of first responders on its Facebook page.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones impacted by the tragic occurrence during last night’s sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion,” the establishment conveyed on Sunday morning.

“We are thankful for the emergency personnel and community members who responded and provided assistance during the situation,” the post concluded. “Please keep everyone affected in your thoughts and prayers.”

The restaurant is also collaborating with local authorities to provide counseling services for staff and community members, according to a subsequent Facebook update.
