China has launched the first batch of satellites for its planned constellation of artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers in orbit.
The 12 satellites will be the start of a planned fleet of 2,800 satellites, which will be overseen by ADA Space and Zhejiang Lab, and will eventually form the Three-Body Computing Constellation, a network of satellites capable of processing data directly in space.
The satellites, launched on May 14 by a Long March 2D rocket from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, are part of a strategy to reduce China's reliance on ground-based computing systems.
