Getting the oxygen you need in an aquatic environment can be a tricky business. While fish and many other aquatic creatures get oxygen directly from the water through their gills, some animals use ingenious methods to pull air bubbles from the surface or hold air around their bodies. Others, however, take a more complex route and hold their breath to dive before surfacing to breathe in air — and repeat the process over and over.

Some of these creatures can stay underwater for astonishingly long periods of time. But which animal can hold its breath the longest? And what features allow it to do so?

While dive time can indicate how long a species typically stays underwater, the duration can vary depending on the reason they stay underwater.
