Astronomers have found the first evidence of a “death planet” – an exoplanet that orbits so close to its star and so fast that it is effectively being incinerated by stellar explosions.
The planet, known as HIP 67522 b, is a thin planet comparable to Jupiter that orbits its star HIP 67522 in a tight, seven-day orbit.
But these orbits disrupt the star's magnetic field, leading to powerful stellar eruptions that pummel the planet and cause it to shrink. This is the first observation of a planet affecting its host star, the scientists report in a study published July 2 in the journal Nature.
