Giraffes are known for their long necks, but their attractive spotted coats also have many distinctive features and serve important functions.
So why do giraffes have spots?
One reason is camouflage; the giraffe's spots help it blend into its surroundings. The irregular spots blur the animal's outline, especially when sunlight filters through the foliage of trees and bushes. This makes them difficult to spot, despite their enormous size, even at a distance of just a few feet.
