A man sparked controversy when he asked to change his seat on a plane to avoid interacting with a plus-size woman because “her size” was making him uncomfortable on a long flight.

He stayed with the woman for nine hours and said her body “flowed” into his personal space.

To avoid conflict, he quietly approached the flight attendant and asked to change his seat.

However, the woman eventually found out about his intentions and was upset.

Sharing his story on Reddit, he explained: “Am I stupid for asking to move to a different seat on a plane? I asked the flight attendant if I could switch seats because I was physically uncomfortable sitting next to a woman whose body had crawled into my seat during a nine-hour flight. I didn't mention her weight or make a scene – I just quietly asked to move.”

AITA because I asked to change my seats on the plane and the woman next to me started crying and called me fatphobe in front of everyone.

He continued: “The conflict arose when the woman realized that I had switched places and began to attack me in front of everyone. She accused me of embarrassing her, and later my friend said that I was afraid of being overweight and inattentive to others.”

Reflecting on the incident, he wondered if he was right in admitting that while he had not meant to hurt her, his actions had obviously humiliated her, and he wondered if he should have been more sensitive or simply tolerated the situation.

One user commented on the situation: “She was the one who embarrassed herself by coming up to you and making a scene. People who are truly ashamed don't scream.”

Another supported: “You kept quiet, behaved respectfully, didn’t make a scene, but this woman did.”

Another comment came from someone sympathetic to the space issue: “And since she took up more space than she was entitled to, she should have been paid for the space she took up, which was two spaces, not one. It's unreasonable to expect you to suffer because of her figure. And this is coming from a larger woman.”

However, when the woman realized that he had changed his seat during the flight, she burst into tears in front of all the passengers and accused him of such behavior.

Another user noted: “She could have easily enjoyed two seats (which she should have paid for), but she was the one who decided to make a scene.”

The article went on to say, “She got space, you avoided back pain for nine hours, everyone wins. No one wondered why you switched places until she ran into you.”

Finally, one user concluded: “You bought a whole seat on the plane. It's not right for someone to climb on top of you and make you uncomfortable. And you very politely asked to move.”

They added: “The only attention this situation has gotten is that she brought it up and she probably just wanted attention. You're definitely not an asshole.”
