In just three years, we will reach a critical climate threshold. Can we reverse course?

In June, more than 60 climate scientists warned that the remaining “carbon budget” needed to keep the climate below the threshold for catastrophic warming would be exhausted in just three years at current emissions rates.

But if we exceed the critical warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), is climate catastrophe inevitable? And are there ways to prevent this temperature rise?

While exceeding the 1.5°C threshold would be problematic, especially for island nations, and raise the risk of irreversible changes to ecosystems, the planet would not be in a state of apocalypse. Experts interviewed by Live Science noted that once we start reducing emissions, there will be ways to gradually reduce temperatures if we do cross the 1.5°C threshold.
