Medieval Amethyst Gemstone Found in Polish Castle Moat

This unique treasure, which is around 600 years old, was discovered in the sediment between the wooden pillars that once supported the bridge.

Lech Marek/AntiquityThe amethyst may have been part of a larger design, such as a brooch or crown.

In an article in Antiquity magazine about the gem, archaeologists suggest that the person who owned the amethyst may have moved in and out of Kolno Castle.

The authenticity of the amethyst was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy, which identifies rocks and gemstones by shining a laser on the material to determine its molecular composition. Additional X-ray analysis showed that the gilded metal in which the stone was inlaid was fire-gilded silver.

In addition, the amethyst is surrounded by a metal ring that forms a pattern of rays or petals. The back of the artifact also contains the remains of a silver pin and lead solder, indicating that it was likely part of a larger piece.
