In the UK, if you are 13 or over, you must have a rod and line licence anywhere in England to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt and eels.
This often applies to all waters including commercial, private and club fishing grounds. Fishing without a rod and tackle licence is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £2,500.
Additionally, you are not allowed to keep any fish you catch in UK rivers as most have catch and release rules, so it is illegal to release them back into the water without permission.
Most fish must be returned to the water unharmed, and you will also need permission from the fishery owner to use bait.
The only exception is usually certain fisheries that fish on a 'set and collect' basis, but you should always check with the fishery owner for details.
A fishing rod license is a separate document that gives the right to fish in a certain body of water. It is usually issued by the owner of a fishing farm or a fishing club.
You can buy a licence online from GOV.UK, from a Post Office or by calling 0344 800 5386.
