Hotel’s optical illusion carpet sparks safety concerns – but some say it’s ‘genius’

An optical illusion carpet at a hotel has divided opinion on social media, with some saying it’s a ‘disaster waiting to happen’ while others believe it’s a stroke of genius.

Hotel guests are utterly baffled by a bizarre carpet design aimed to deter them from sprinting through the corridors. Snapped and uploaded to Reddit’s mildly infuriating forum, the image has sparked heated discussions among over 1,500 online commentators.

Opinions are sharply divided, with some calling the carpet a potential hazard and others praising its ingenuity for potentially stopping people running, including excitable youngsters. The deceivingly designed black and purple carpet creates an optical illusion of uneven ground, despite its even surface.

The cleverly deceptive floor covering is speculated to have been laid out to prevent hotel guests from sprinting through the halls to avoid accidents and annoying other guests. Weighing in on the trickery, one individual posted: “I feel like that’s super cool, but also I would fall down immediately.”

Another envisaged the hardships of navigating the tricky terrain under the influence: “Imagine walking down this hallway while drunk.”

Meanwhile, a third user said: “That’s pretty cool. I’d also hope I’d be in my room and hear some kids run down the hall and trip, fall, and cry. I would then leave 5 stars for that hotel.”

An additional remark came from someone grappling with balance issues: “My vertigo does not like this.”

Lastly, one particularly crafty user suggested a workaround to the anti-dash measure: “It’s to prevent kids from running in the hallways. That’s why I tell my kids to just hop or jump over them instead”.

It comes after a travel blogger revealed a nifty trick to keep your hotel room’s lights on without the need for a key card. The TikTok sensation, known as Curious Claire, shared her discovery after observing a cleaner using an everyday item from the hotel.

“Here is a hotel hack that I just learned today,” she began. “So, you know hotels now mainly have card readers, and you have to put your hotel key card into it to get the electricity to work?

“It’s really annoying when you want to charge something – and I think a lot of us know the trick way to put another card into it – I usually use a gift card that I have in my purse.

“But, today I was walking past one of the rooms as the maid was doing it up and I saw what she did – and oh my God, I can’t believe it, I have to try it to see if it works! So, when I walked past the room earlier she had one of these do not disturb signs in the card reader and now I’ve got to try it to see if it works.

“So as you can see there’s no card key in there right now. – nothing was happening.”

Testing the hack herself, Claire was amazed to find it worked perfectly – vowing to use this method on future travels. She added: “The moment of truth – oh my God that actually works, that’s mad!

“I can’t believe this works by putting that in the card reader – I have to try this out at other hotels now!”.
