Hidden WhatsApp feature changes emoji colour on iPhone

There’s a hidden WhatsApp feature that transforms one emoji into a completely different colour. Turns out, there’s an incredibly interesting reason for it.

Ever noticed that one emoji changes colour when tapping away on your phone?

If you haven’t, you certainly aren’t the only one. Countless users flocked to Reddit to voice their disbelief over one hidden WhatsApp feature that comes into play on both iPhone and Android devices.

Incredibly, this concerns the racing car emoji which usually appears as red on a typical keyboard. However, when selected within the Meta-owned app, texters realised it flips to a chic black and turquoise combination.

“Just tested, can confirm,” one Redditor said, as others chimed in: “THAT’S THE WHATSAPP EMOJI CAR AND IT’S A REAL THING,” and: “It only works on WhatsApp. Because of their sponsor.”

While you may assume this is some kind of glitch, there’s actually a perfectly simple reason for it.

They really got rid of the red racing car and put a Mercedes as the emoji.

In 2023, WhatsApp entered a deal with Mercedes Formula One team for the first time ever. Not only is the WhatsApp logo now plastered on the team’s wheels, its app is also dishing out exclusive content and in-race news to fans via private messaging, according to AP News.

Fast forward to April 2024 and the app took this up a notch, unveiling an emoji inspired by the cars of seven-time World Champion winner Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who’s smashed it on to the podum 13 times.

CEO of Mercedes F1 team, Toto Wolff, previously explained: “In recent years, our sport and WhatsApp have both been on an impressive growth journey in the United States. The partnership between ourselves as a team and WhatsApp, our official messaging partner, is therefore a natural fit.

“We rely daily on WhatsApp for the privacy and security it affords in our communications, which is vital in F1. We are also both passionate about connecting people through shared experiences, committed to telling incredible stories, and setting the benchmark in our respective fields.”
