‘I went metal detecting – now my garden is a crime scene’

A man used a metal detector in his garden to see if he could find anything interesting – but he was left terrified when he uncovered something sinister.

A man made a staggering discovery in his garden when he used a metal detector to scour the area. In a recently-resurfaced Reddit post, the man said, rather than find coins or jewellery, he instead discovered human remains – prompting a call to police.

He detailed the chilling scene: “Local police and detectives are here. Called the state police who are getting the medical examiner’s office involved. Human bone fragment + handgun + concrete slab = murder.”

The Massachusetts resident described how cops cordoned off his garden to conduct the investigation, leaving him to observe from his window. While he knew his home was built in 1890, the land’s prior use remained a mystery to him.

After days of scrutiny, the police downgraded the status of the site from a potential crime scene to a burial ground. The man relayed the update: “It’s no longer a murder site. Dead person, yes. Murder, a possibility. But they are calling it a grave site.”

“The person might have the initials GRH or a school GR High. This is interesting. The bracelet that was in the hole has “GRH” initials on it. They are keeping that and the cufflink as evidence. GRH was buried with his favourite gun…” After collecting evidence and concluding their investigation on the site, the police granted him permission to look into it further, if he so wished.

He said: “They gave us permission to continue on our own. We found a large bone within the first hour today and found the match to the cufflink if we call that in. Everything will stop. Again. So we will gather a few items and let them know!

“Just a few pieces of jewellery and large bone today. Looks like a hip bone. We found the edge of the concrete slab and will be attempting to flip it over tomorrow! It will start to rain later in the day so we have to hustle before it starts. I’m so excited! They gave me the gun back to keep!

“Took a DNA swab from me (but not my wife or son) state police broke the bracelet. Five of the six bones were confirmed human. They are testing all the bones to see if they are from the same person. Fingers crossed. Under the concrete slab. Where the head is located, I’m getting a good solid signal for lead or gold.”
