Cryptic film teaser baffles locals – can you guess title?

A man was left stumped after being asked by his village church to solve a three-word cryptic clue to reveal the title of the movie

A local was left scratching his head after spotting an advert for a “Film Night” at his village church, which intriguingly didn’t reveal the movie’s title due to licensing legislation.

The event, set to unfold at St Mary’s Church hall in Appledore, Devon, on Friday (September 27), sparked curiosity among residents when the organisers provided a cryptic three-word hint to solve the film’s identity.

Taking to Reddit, the baffled villager posted: “Two questions. 1. Why can’t they advertise the title of the film? [an answer seemingly found within the text itself]. And 2. What is the title of the film?”

The poster for the night also mentioned that attendees could engage in fundraising activities for a £5 fee, with all proceeds benefiting Children’s Hospice South West. The teasing clue on the poster read: “Cryptic clue – 3 words – Female in precious metal.”

The reasoning behind the brainteaser followed: “The conditions of our screening licence do not allow us to advertise the title of the film.” This led to a flurry of guesses on Reddit, with one user confidently suggesting: “Using my supreme filmological knowledge, I believe the answer is Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.”

Another chimed in with a guess: “The Iron Lady?” While a third member of the CasualUK subreddit speculated: “That three word cryptic clue had four words in it. Is that a clue? My money is on Goldfinger.”

However, several Reddit users were convinced they’d cracked the code, with many suggesting the film in question is Woman in Gold. One of them penned: “Woman in Gold, a 2015 biographical film starring Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, and Charles Dance.”

A second person quipped: “Woman in Gold. If they told you what it was you’d be even less likely to attend.” While a third concurred: “Got to be Woman In Gold? Wasn’t that popular but Helen Mirren was good and Ryan Reynolds plays a straight character (as in, not a comedy role).”

In response to queries regarding the advertising legislation, meanwhile, one legal buff provided a link to help clear up any confusion.

A section on the Motion Picture Licensing Company web site reads: “Once I have an MPLC Blanket Licence, can I advertise a movie or program that I want to show?”

And answering the query, it continues: “You can not use the programme or film title and character names publicly on a website or social media account, billboard, advert or any other publicly visible media.

“MPLC Public Performance Licences are affordable, easy to buy and can be put in place immediately. They are the legal way to show movies and TV programmes in a public or commercial space.”
