Kim Jong-un has reportedly banned North Koreans from eating hot dogs because they are too associated with the West.

The despot decreed that anyone caught preparing or selling them would commit treason.

Those who break the law risk ending up in the communist country's labor camps, where conditions are so terrible that the UN says they amount to crimes against humanity.

The decree is the latest example of Pyongyang cracking down on what it sees as Western cultural encroachment, the Sun reported.

The latest target was Budae-jjigae, a spicy noodle soup topped with hot dogs or Spam.

It was imported from pro-Western South Korea in 2017 and quickly gained popularity.

However, a vendor in the northern province of Ryanggang said, “Budae-jjigae sales at the market have stopped.”

“Police and market management have said that anyone caught selling the product will be punished.”

Kim is also reported to have ordered divorcing couples to be sent to a labor camp for up to six months to atone for their “crimes.”

This is because division is seen as “anti-socialist”.

Until last year, only the person who filed for divorce first was sent to a labor camp, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.

A resident of northern Ryanggang Province said, “I visited the Kimjeongsuk County People’s Court… where 12 people received divorce decrees.

“Immediately after the sentence was passed, they were transferred to the district correctional labor camp.”

Divorce rates have increased amid the COVID-19 pandemic as couples face financial hardship due to lockdown measures.

The figures have not dropped significantly despite threats of public humiliation and expulsion from the Workers' Party of Korea.

Since coming to power in 2011, Kim has introduced many unusual rules in North Korea.

In recent times, people have been threatened with execution for celebrating Christmas.

On New Year's Eve, the Supreme Leader was spotted with his daughter Kim Ju Ae, which was interpreted as another sign that he has chosen her as his successor.
