Your Android smartphone will be faster than broadband this year, thanks to a major update from Qualcomm.
If you're tired of Netflix freezing up during your last viewing because your broadband can't keep up, take note of this update. Your phone may soon become a better option than connecting to Wi-Fi.
American tech giant Qualcomm, whose processors power some of today's best smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S25, has announced the launch of its new X85 5G system, which will soon appear in premium devices.
A 5G modem is capable of delivering speeds in excess of 12Gbps if the network allows it, meaning your next Android phone could be 12 times faster than the UK's current best fixed broadband connection. At those speeds, you'll be able to download a full HD movie in just one second.
5G isn't just useful when your home internet can't keep up. The X85 is also said to be significantly more power efficient, meaning that when using 4G and 5G on your phone outside the home, it should have less of an impact on your device's battery life.

The X85 5G modem will be built into future premium phones, though there's no word yet on which models that will be. Apple recently released the entry-level iPhone 16e, which was the first Apple device to feature Apple's own 5G modem rather than one from Qualcomm, but it's unclear whether the iPhone 17, due later this year, will revert to Qualcomm's technology and possibly the X85.
If that doesn't happen, we expect the X85 5G to appear in premium Android phones later this year, while the X82 5G modem, which was also announced alongside the X85, will likely find its way into mid-range devices.
While the X82 modem may not be as powerful as the X85, it can still provide better speeds than your home broadband, depending on your home network.
