The pregnant teenager was allegedly killed by a woman who lured her to her home, cut open her stomach and stole her unborn child.
Emily Acevedo Sena, 16, who was nine months pregnant, was found buried Thursday in a back garden in Cuiabá, Brazil, with her stomach cut open and her baby removed.
Natalie Helen Martins Pereira, 25, and her husband, chef Christian Albino Ceballo de Arruda, 28, were arrested hours later at a local hospital after attempting to register the birth of their newborn baby girl, daughter Emily, in their names. Pereira allegedly lured the teenager to the scene the night before through WhatsApp messages, claiming she wanted to give her baby clothes.
She refused to allow the teenager to take her husband with her and told her, "You said your husband was coming, he can go, I just won't let him because I'm married." The teenager insisted that her husband would still accompany her but would remain outside the house.
Emily's mother told Brazil's G1 News that the woman assured her daughter that she was also a mother expecting another child and even paid for her transportation to the location. The mother explained: "She said she had a lot of baby clothes and wanted to donate some to Emily. She sent her the address and even transferred money through Pix so that my daughter could get there and pick them up. But she left and never came back."
Tests conducted on Pereira after her arrest showed she was not pregnant. Emily's baby remained in hospital on Friday.
Emily's body was found buried in the suspects' back garden on Thursday, shortly after their arrest at the hospital. Police believe she was strangled with cables, with detective Caio Alexandre telling local media the couple "used bladed weapons to extract the child."
Pereira's husband, 28-year-old Christian de Arruda, told investigators he believed his wife had actually given birth and was unaware of the crime.
He even posted a photo of the baby on social media with the caption “Bless you my daughter” to announce that he had become a father. The incident is being investigated by Brazil’s Homicide and Personal Security Department (DHPP), which is also reportedly questioning two other suspects. Detectives say they could face charges of murder, concealment of a body, and fraud.
