Holograms that can be physically interpreted have moved beyond the realm of science fiction and into our reality thanks to advances in mixed reality.

In a new study published March 6 in the HAL open archive, scientists analyzed how three-dimensional holograms could be grasped and felt using elastic materials as the core element of volumetric displays.

The innovation allows for interaction with 3D graphics — such as grabbing and moving a virtual cube with your hand — without damaging the holographic system. The research has not yet undergone peer review, although the scientists have shown off their results in a video demonstrating the technology.
