A large white streak of light resembling an aurora appeared in the night sky over several US states in recent days after a Chinese rocket launched six satellites into orbit. The light show began when the rocket jettisoned a new type of fuel before re-entering the atmosphere, according to experts.

The glowing streak appeared around 1:24 a.m. ET Saturday (May 17) and remained visible for about 10 minutes before finally fading. It was spotted in at least seven states — Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington and New Mexico — but was likely visible further afield, according to information from Spaceweather.com.

Photographer Mike Lewinsky captured some impressive images of the streak from Creston, Colorado (above), and also managed to capture footage of the entire event. Meanwhile, photographer Jay Shaffer captured a stunning long-exposure photo of the streak in Taos County, New Mexico (below).
