At an auction of President Abraham Lincoln's personal belongings, one unique item was on display that caught the attention of many.
A pair of gloves that were in Lincoln's pocket at Ford's Theater the night he was shot have sold for the highest price, the Associated Press reports.
The bloody gloves, made of leather, sold for $1.52 million, including buyer's commission.
Of the 144 items offered at the Freeman's/Hindman auction in Chicago, 136 found new owners.
The auction was held to raise funds to repay a loan taken out by the Lincoln Presidential Foundation, which has been in existence for 20 years.

Also among the finds associated with Lincoln on the night of his assassination was a handkerchief that sold for $826,000.
Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on the night of April 14, 1865, while watching the play Our American Cousin.
The auction also included a “Wanted” poster featuring three murder suspects, including Wilkes Booth.

This item sold for $762,500.

According to the AP, it is believed to be the earliest known example of his handwriting.
The artifacts were pulled from the foundation's 1,540-item collection, acquired in 2007 from Louise Taper for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the AP reported.

The auction ultimately raised $7.9 million, including a buyer's commission of 28% of each sale.
