In the greenish-smoky light of the sky, ghostly ripples can be seen.
On May 26, under the starry skies of Colorado, with the Milky Way arcing into view, photographer Aaron Watson raised his camera and captured something unusual unfolding in the night.
“I've seen airglow many times, but it's rare to see it directly above me and moving like that,” Watson told Space.com in an email.
The timelapse, taken by Watson around 3:30 a.m. local time and spanning about 30 minutes, shows watery-green ripples of airglow streaking across the sky. “Most of it was invisible to the naked eye,” Watson said.
