Researchers have found that among primates, alpha males rarely exert influence over females, and instances of male and female dominance occur with equal frequency.

A team of scientists analyzed intersexual dominance in more than 100 primate species and found that in most cases, neither sex exhibits clear dominance, challenging the traditional idea that males are generally more powerful.

The study's findings, published July 7 in the journal PNAS, provide a detailed look at intersexual relationships in which both sexes can often prevail in aggressive encounters.
