The Artificial Intelligence Innovation Council was launched in the nation's capital on Wednesday, aiming to help the United States become a global leader in AI.
Former Department of Government Effectiveness General Counsel James Burnham has announced the creation of a council in Washington, D.C., to support President Donald Trump's strategy for global superiority in artificial intelligence.
“Artificial intelligence is a transformative technology that has the potential to make the United States richer and stronger than ever before,” Burnham said in a press release.
“That’s why President Trump made it clear in his first week in office that ‘it is the policy of the United States to maintain and strengthen America’s global leadership in artificial intelligence, which will advance human well-being, economic competitiveness, and national security,’” Burnham added.
The AI Innovation Council is an independent policy forum aimed at strengthening the United States' position in the field of artificial intelligence.
New technologies often create monopolies that control them, but Burnham stressed that this should not prevent the country from pursuing AI innovation.
“I, like many others, have been outspoken about the problems of big tech companies and their monopoly power,” he added, “but it would be a grave mistake to let legitimate concerns about past abuses prevent new innovators from leading our country into a new golden age.”
The AI Innovation Council will advocate for legislative oversight that balances oversight and innovation so that both established and emerging companies can develop breakthrough AI products in the U.S., Burnham said.
“The goal is not just to win the innovation race,” he said. “But to help usher in America's golden age.”
On July 15, Trump announced investments of more than $100 billion in energy and AI technologies that he said would create an AI-powered economy in the United States.
He said the investment would create tens of thousands of jobs in the energy and AI sectors and help the country strengthen its position in the global AI market.
Trump announced the investment during the Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh.
