Engineers have created a spaceship that could carry up to 2,400 people in one direction to Alpha Centauri, the closest star to our solar system. In a project description, the engineers claim that the vessel, called Chrysalis, could travel the 40 trillion kilometers in about 400 years. That means many of its future passengers will only know about life on board.
Chrysalis is designed to host several generations of humans before it arrives in a star system where it can deposit them on the surface of the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b, an Earth-like planet thought to be habitable.
The project won first place in the Hyperion competition, in which teams were asked to create hypothetical spaceships of different generations for interstellar travel.
