A group of women's getaway to an isolated Kentucky cabin nearly led to tragedy when two members in their 80s became trapped in a hot tub after being unable to leave on their own, emergency services said Friday.
During a group vacation earlier this month in the Red River Canyon area of southeastern Kentucky, the elderly women faced a serious problem when they were too physically ill to escape from hot water, according to a statement from the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team (WSCART).
According to the rescuers' report, both victims lost consciousness in the jacuzzi due to the development of hyperthermia – a dangerous overheating of the body that disrupts natural thermoregulation.
As the rescue service clarified, the third member of the group dived into the water to keep the head of one of the women above the surface, and the fourth quickly called emergency services.

By the time WSCART and Wolfe County police arrived, the lodge staff had already pulled the women out of the hot tub. One of the victims was semi-conscious, the other was completely unconscious and showed signs of critical deterioration.
To stabilize the unconscious woman, she was moved into a cold shower and ice packs were applied. The second victim was taken out into the fresh air, where a hose with cool water and ice were used to reduce her body temperature.

After 20-30 minutes of cooling, both women began to show signs of improvement. Emergency medical services arranged for their transportation to the nearest hospital.
Information about chronic diseases or health limitations of the victims is not specified.
WSCART officials described the incident as a “teachable example” and stressed the importance of adhering to time restrictions when using hot tubs.
“Before diving, make sure you can exit on your own, especially if you have physical limitations,” the rescuers warned. “Hyperthermia and heat stroke are fatal risks. The prompt actions of all participants in the operation prevented a fatal outcome.”
