Psychologists, sociologists, and other enthusiasts for delving into the human soul and the specifics of social connections continue to debate how to assess the internet's impact on individuals and society. Some continue to harp on the dangers of the internet, claiming that excessive cyberdependence makes people unable to communicate normally in real life, and so on. Others insist that the internet isn't as scary as it's portrayed, and that it helps many people overcome their inhibitions, make new connections (which can easily extend from the virtual world to the real world), and share their problems.
French scientists Loic Roche and Yannick Chatelain recently published another study on people's virtual activity. Their book is titled “In Bed with the Web: The Internet—A Paradise for Infidelity.” Both authors have long been studying how new technologies, including computer technologies, impact society and relationships. They argue that the World Wide Web is the cause of personal breakdowns in those who indulge excessively in virtual relationships.
The book's authors write that the temptation to escape real life through online communication is becoming too great. People, both men and women alike, see it as a panacea for real-life problems and are therefore eager to meet new people. However, the desire to transfer online relationships to real life often leads to the breakdown of existing partnerships. According to statistics, only 15-20% of people who meet online decide to meet in real life. Moreover, relationships formed online and then transferred to real life rarely last long.
Louak Roche says the internet's effect on people is akin to an aphrodisiac. It removes inhibitions and allows one to forget complexes. In such a situation, it becomes much easier for people to initiate communication. The psychologist notes that it's much easier for people to communicate behind their backs with someone they've never met than to simply approach them on the street.
However, psychologists' warnings won't change anything in this world. The number of people regularly visiting dating sites continues to grow steadily. Some come here hoping to improve their personal lives, others are looking for a one-night stand, and still others are simply bored at home and expect nothing more from dating than casual online chatter.
