A deep-sea expedition off the coast of Argentina has yielded stunning footage of more than 40 previously undescribed species.

The surprise star of the show was a plump sea life form that was dubbed the “big butt starfish” for its striking resemblance to Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants.

As the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SuBastian dives into Argentina’s Mar del Plata Canyon on July 23, scientists on board the research vessel are providing live, high-definition video feeds with real-time commentary about the rare deep-sea creatures. The dives have uncovered carnivorous sponges, translucent fish, brightly colored rays, and corals never seen before in the South Atlantic, an area of rich biodiversity that remains largely unexplored.
