“Big cats” are modern members of the genus Panthera. There are five species of these large cats, including lions and tigers.

They live on most continents – including Africa, Asia and South America – and in a wide range of habitats, such as savannas and jungles. Like all felines (cats), they are carnivores.

Big cats often occupy a top position on the food chain, meaning they have a significant impact on ecosystems, mainly through predation, which helps control animal populations. To conserve energy, big cats have evolved to lie in wait for their prey before swooping in and killing it.

Big cats are some of the most fascinating creatures on the planet, but how much do you know about these ferocious predators? Put your head in the mouth of a lion and take our quiz to test your knowledge.
