Two fledgling spinosaurids are hunting down a young Phuwiangosaurus in Cretaceous Thailand. A big, grown-up spinosaurid (not the freshly revealed Sam Ran spinosaurid) is inactive in the distance by a water source, with two plumed Kinnareemimus appearing next to the trees on the side.
Roughly 125 million years prior, a dinosaur exceeding the length of a small truck roamed rivers to feast on fish in contemporary Thailand.
Spinosaurids comprised a lineage of two-legged predatory creatures bearing extended muzzles, reptile-resembling teeth, and for numerous types, crests upon their backs. Academic researchers surmise that the discovered Thai fossil, first brought to light in 2004, was part of the Spinosaurinae branch, counting the most sizable carnivorous dinosaur variety, Spinosaurus — a likely swimming hunter originating from North Africa, expanding to measurements of roughly 50 feet (15 m) in length.

“This discovery from Thailand enables a fuller insight into the form of spinosaurines alongside their progress across the Asian continent,” Adun Samathi, a supportive instructor within the Walai Rukhavej Botanical Research Center and Mahasarakham University of Thailand, communicated to Live Science via digital mail. “[The fossilized remains] equally demonstrate increased dinosaur variation in Southeast Asia than past considerations, broadening perceptions on the distribution of these distinct piscivorous predators around our planet.”
Samathi introduced the spinosaurid conclusions on the date of Nov. 12 at the Vertebrate Paleontology Society yearly gathering in Birmingham, England, for the year 2025. The judgments lack formal assessment, given Samathi and his associates still need to forward them to a scientific publication.
The researchers are yet to fix a designated label for this dinosaur. Though, it has gained the nickname of the Sam Ran spinosaurid, owing to its detection in the Sam Ran locale (zone) within the Khok Kruat rock structure throughout northeastern Thailand, per Samathi, whose scholastic dissertation engaged with the spinosaurid. The Sam Ran spinosaurid expired alongside a moderately shallow river prior to undergoing the fossilization of some remains. Samathi doubts the aptitude of the specific spinosaurid to swim, yet it presumably availed itself of the river’s environment, abounding with organisms at the time the dinosaur passed away relatively early inside the Cretaceous timeline (145 million to 66 million years prior).
“The modern spinosaur existed (or alternatively [was] recovered) within a watery region characterized by sluggish streams and occasional inundations, inside a landscape shifting across aridity,” as quoted by Samathi. “The grounds there have emitted varied animal specimens, ranging across freshwater sharks, bony species of fish, turtles, crocodiles, coupled with dinosaurs, exemplified by a sauropod and an iguanodontian.”
