Japanese quail are small relatives of chickens and turkeys that have one rather unusual feature: the males produce a unique foam from their semen that resembles meringue.

This foam is not typical of most birds, although turkeys produce something similar.

Japanese quails were bred in captivity as early as the 11th century and were originally kept for their melodic songs. However, over time they began to be bred for their meat and eggs.
