Should you take your pet with you when you travel?

Summer is coming, and many owners of Barsiks and Murkas are starting to worry about the question: where to put their pets during their vacation? While traveling with an animal is common abroad, and nothing will stop an American or a Frenchman from taking their pet with them on vacation, such trips are a rarity in our country. Few of our compatriots dare to travel with their pets. Let's figure out which animals are worth taking with you on a trip, and which are better left under the supervision of friends?

Most cats easily tolerate separation from their owners, so you can leave them with your neighbors or relatives with peace of mind, and go breathe the sea air yourself. But make sure that the cat is trained to use the litter box, otherwise it will cause a lot of trouble for its temporary owners.

Usually, domestic birds and rodents do not notice separation from their owners. For parrots, chinchillas and guinea pigs, the most important thing is to have someone to look after them, so you should not carry a cage with a winged or furry creature everywhere with you. Make sure that your pet remains under the supervision of a person you trust, and you can safely pack your bags.

But it will be more difficult with dogs. Separation from their owners will be a big stress for them. Left under the supervision of strangers, they may even refuse food and water. German and Central Asian shepherds, mastiffs, rottweilers, bulldogs and representatives of hunting breeds are especially attached to their owners. With poodles, Dobermans and retrievers it is a little easier – these dogs quickly get used to new surroundings and feel quite normal away from their owners.

If you cannot take your beloved dog with you on vacation, then prepare it for separation in advance. Take your pet to its temporary home several times before leaving. It is desirable that the dog is left alone with its new caregiver for at least a couple of hours. If contact is established between them, then you can safely go on vacation. But do not forget to bring its plate and bedding from home before parting with your pet – they are soaked with the smell of home and the dog will feel calmer next to them.

Leaving your pet under the care of friends or neighbors is acceptable only when you are going away for a short time, because caring for someone else's animal is a troublesome business. You can place your pet in the care of dog handlers or breeders – in this case, it will be provided with professional care. Do not overlook zoo hotels – although the services in these establishments are expensive, but your four-legged friend will be provided with everything: from comfortable accommodation and good nutrition to timely ear cleaning.

But if your cat, dog, hamster or other pet refuses to get along with strangers, you will have no choice but to take it with you on a trip. Usually, animals tolerate long journeys well. But sometimes they start to get carsick. You don’t have to wait until the poor thing throws up: stop the transport every 10-15 minutes and treat your pet with a treat for behaving well on the trip. You will have to move in such jerks until the animal gets used to the car.

To transport cats and rodents, you should use specially designed carriers. They are necessary to prevent the animal from unexpectedly jumping on the driver or getting under the car pedals.

Don't be afraid to take your four-legged friend along with you. After traveling with you several times, he will quickly adapt to the change of environment, and there will be no more problems with his transportation.
