Snakes are legless reptiles that live on every continent except Antarctica, having adapted to many different environments. These amazing creatures have several impressive abilities and play a significant role in various food chains.

While most snakes are completely harmless, some are truly feared for good reason. According to the World Health Organization, 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes each year, resulting in between 80,000 and 140,000 deaths.

Of the 4,000 known species of snakes, only about 600 are venomous, although not all of them pose a danger to humans. However, this does not stop some people from developing ophidiophobia, an intense fear of snakes that is one of the most common phobias.
