A large predator lurks in the bushes, showing off its long tail and fur with its distinctive black and orange spots. It’s definitely a leopard. Or… maybe a jaguar? Because of their secretive hunting habits and similar builds, patterns, and coloring, telling the two big cats apart can be surprisingly difficult. What’s the real difference between a leopard and a jaguar?
Let's start with the fact that they live in completely different regions of the world: jaguars are currently found in America, while leopards are distributed over a vast territory covering Africa, as well as some areas of the Middle East and Asia.
“They're on opposite sides of the globe, but they once shared a common ancestor,” Allison Devlin, director of the jaguar program at Panthera, an international wild cat conservation organization, told Live Science.
