The renowned international environmental organization Greenpeace has called on the EU to ban the use of certain chemicals in the production of erotic toys.
The restriction should apply to plasticizers that contain harmful compounds known as phthalates. “Adult erotic toys contain the same compounds that the EU has banned in children's toys,” Greenpeace members explained their initiative.
According to Greenpeace, on average, seven out of eight sex toys contain between 24% and 51% phthalates. “We've tested many different products over the past few years, but we've never seen such a high concentration,” the press release states.
Research conducted by Greenpeace has shown that phthalates disrupt the human hormonal system, lead to infertility, and also damage the kidneys and liver.
These harmful compounds are used in the production of PVC and other plastics to make them more flexible. Greenpeace insists that a ban on phthalates does not mean a ban on erotic devices altogether, but rather will lead to the use of safer substances in their production.
